NBA 2K24 is on the way, and 2K revealed a highly anticipated feature is part of the game. Visual Concepts, the game’s developers, have confirmed that NBA 2K24 crossplay will be available between next-generation consoles. Several trailers and advertisements have arrived to promote this exciting NBA 2K development.
Along with that, cover athletes and 2K24 game editions were revealed, with pre-orders now available. Kobe Bryant, a superhero amongst mere basketball mortals while on the planet, is the 2K24 cover athlete. New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu will appear on an exclusive WNBA cover for the game.
Visual Concepts reveals NBA 2K24 crossplay for new 2K game
Yes, NBA 2K24 will include crossplay, a much-requested feature from 2K’s community. Crossplay allows players with different systems to compete against one another as long as they’re online. It means that players on Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) can compete against those on Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S across all 2K’s game modes.

Additionally, 2K24 brings back Dual-gen access. However, this is only available with two editions of the game: Black Mamba Edition and 25th Anniversary Edition.
Kobe Bryant on NBA 2K24 covers, Mamba Moments included
As of this writing, the NBA 2K24 game has three editions and four covers. The late, great Kobe Bryant is an official NBA 2K24 cover athlete, returning to grace the front of the game. As shown in the images below, he’ll appear as the cover star on the Kobe Bryant Edition and the Black Mamba Edition.
The former represents his early years with the Los Angeles Lakers, featuring him in his iconic number 8 jersey, while the latter showcases his legendary number 24.
We also got our first look at several of Kobe’s likenesses from the 2K24 video game, with the Black Mamba in his No. 24 and No. 8 Lakers jerseys.
Kobe isn’t just a cover star and playable superstar in the NBA video game. He’ll also have a unique series of playable Mamba Moments in the game.
“Recreate some of Kobe’s most captivating performances and progress through his transcendent journey from a young phenom to one of the greatest players of all time,” a description of the feature read via 2K’s report.
Kobe’s 2K24 covers aren’t his first time on the front of the game box. In fact, he appeared on the NBA 2K21 Mamba Forever Edition several years ago. Before that, Kobe was on the NBA 2K17 and NBA 2K10 covers. His 2K24 covers mark his sixth covers for the game, the most of any NBA player.
In 2020, Kobe appeared as an Avengers-like comic book character with artist Joe Quesada paying homage to him on an ESPN cover image he created. It featured Kobe with an Iron Man glove, LeBron holding Captain America’s shield, and Kevin Durant wielding Thor’s Hammer.
WNBA Cover Athlete and Anniversary Edition of NBA 2K24
Along with Kobe, the WNBA’s Sabrina Ionescu was revealed as the cover star for a special WNBA Edition of the 2K24 video game. This version of the game is a Gamestop exclusive, available only from the video game retailer, and features the New York Liberty’s All-Star guard on the cover.
Sabrina reacted to seeing her cover for the first time in a video alongside Ronnie 2K.
As we mentioned, there are three editions of NBA 2K24: Kobe Bryant Edition, Black Mamba Edition, and a 25th Anniversary Edition. The Kobe editions are incredible on their own. However, gamers wanting the best of the best will likely opt for the 25th Anniversary Edition of 2K24. It features a plethora of great bonuses.
One of those bonuses is a 12-month subscription to NBA League Pass, which allows basketball fans to watch all 30 NBA teams’ games throughout the season. Not only does it have League Pass, but it also includes 100K VC, exclusive Kobe MyTeam items, and much more, per 2K’s report.
NBA 2K24 Pre-order details and release date
On Friday, July 7, the NBA 2K24 pre-orders went live for fans to secure their copies of the upcoming game. A September 8, 2023, release date was revealed for NBA 2K24. The limited availability 25th Anniversary Edition is available through September 10th.
The Kobe Bryant Edition is $59.99 on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PCs. It’s available for $69.99 on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S systems.
By comparison, the NBA 2K24 Black Mamba Edition is $99.99 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It includes bonuses like 100K Virtual Currency and special MyTEAM content.
As mentioned, NBA 2K24’s 25th Anniversary Edition is the best of the best and costs $149.99. It’s available for Sony’s PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.
